(SPOILERS ALERT) Were you a Love Island watcher? Even if you weren’t, I have a thought that this show has a lot more to it than just a dating show of young single men and women. Having had the winners of Love Island 2017 announced last night and the whole season now over, I thought I’d do a post on the show and what those thoughts are!
“A social experiment is a research project conducted with human subjects in the real world. It typically investigates the effects of a policy intervention by randomly assigning individuals, families, businesses, classrooms, or other units to different treatments or to a controlled condition”
This quote can be found as the opening paragraph on a Wikipedia page of ‘Social Experiment’. Love Island I feel like could easily fit into this definition.
For those who aren’t aware of what Love Island is or what happens in the show. So I’ll start with that!
Single boys and girls are asked to ‘couple up’ in the villa based on first impressions. They then go on to live in the isolated villa surrounded by cameras filming at all times. The show is broadcast every night (except Saturday’s) and the Islanders after a short amount of time get to recurrently re-couple. Ultimately, the public vote out the candidates they like the least, and then the couple who wins the show, has the chance to win £50,000.
That’s it in short.
(For those who watch it, we all know, that of course, there is so much more to it!)
So the reason I think this is a social experiment is because, similarly to the show ‘Big Brother’ if you throw a bunch of strangers into a house, villa, room, even prison! (Check the Stanford Prison Experiment) people will react in certain ways and it really tests social boundaries.
A programme dedicated solely to people finding love in which the producers create ‘tests’ and ‘games’ to almost torment the couples, it really tests and pokes at their experience in the villa, causing emotions of love, sadness, despair, anger etc.
It pushes people to their limits and tests their boundaries.
And then combines the two biggest drives in life into one, love, and money.
I found this show compelling from the first episode. I never watched any other of the series in the previous years so this was my first time watching and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the couples journeys throughout the show.
SO WELL DONE KEMBER!!!!!
Winners of Love Island 2017
(Secretly hoped Camila and Jamie would win – Montana was my favourite girl, and Kem was my favourite guy!)
