Tattoos are found dated way back to 1200 BC mummified bodies in China were found with ink on their skin. Typically, it was thought that only criminals were tattooed. Which is perhaps where the taboo of having a tattoo comes from. But Japanese men began adorning their bodies with elaborate tattoos in the late A.D. So there has always been contradicting views and uses for tattoos. There are still many cultures today, that tattoo the women and men, almost cover them in beautiful meaning cultural patterns and symbols. And this is no representation of their social status, or criminal history.
Now, in the 21st Century, it is thought that in 2011 it was up to 40% of the population had a tattoo, or more. It is also predicted that we will not reach “peak tattoo” until 2025!
My personal thoughts on tattoos are sort of non-existent. I have many myself, I think I have around… 15 or 16 now. They’re mostly hidden, I have 4 on my arm now, which are probably the most visible, and one behind my ear which is shown when my hair is up. But ultimately, I couldn’t care less if I meet someone with or without tattoos.
I’ve met some people, who only date guys/girls with tattoos, or only date guys/girls without them! To me, it’s not even a thing.
From a young age I always wanted tattoos. No one in my direct family has them. I got my first one when I was 16… yeah, underage. I wouldn’t advise it, not because anything went wrong, and I don’t regret it at all! But I just know there are plenty of other 16 year olds who do regret their tattoos. Saying this, there are also many people who get tattoos at an older age who regret it. So age, isn’t necessarily the issue. I think regret, and mind changing comes from your personality, and thought process. I knew from a young age I wanted them, and I developed into getting more, and exploring different artwork and themes I liked. I have quite a strong minded personality, and I also don’t take things too seriously, so getting tattoos, wasn’t a huge deal to me. I don’t think the way you look is the most important thing!
Tattoos in my opinion identify a person, I feel like I have a story to each tattoo. Some of which I share, some I don’t. But as my mum says “At least your body will be easily identified”. I take that as a positive thing. Some people use it as a way of differentiating themselves to others. A marker, you’ve chosen yourself, to be on your body. You choose the way your body looks.
A lot of the older generation dislike tattoos, because they associate it with being tacky, and criminal. There are a high percentage of criminals who do have tattoos. And there really are some tacky and badly done tattoos also!!! But I think associating every inked person with being criminal is prejudice and inaccurate.
“Some of the worst people in the world wear suits and ties, not tattoos!”
